Game On! August 20-24, News, Updates and Celebrations

Dear BMS Community,

It has been a great first full week! Thank you parents, students and staff for getting Bruin Nation started out right! We have many wonderful learning activities going on in the Nation and we hope students are coming home excited about school and what they are doing in class.  Teachers have been diving in to real-world learning experiences for students and the students are doing fantastic.  Keep being AMAZING Bruin Nation!  We are GAME ON!!

Students have received lockers and chromebooks.  If your student has not received these items at this point please make sure all paperwork forms & fees have been turned in.  The Cubs (6th grade) did an outstanding job learning how to operate those combination locks and it looks like many of the jitters have subsided. The Cubs House has awesome teachers who are helping to settle students right into the middle school groove!

New this year! Who to see for What? & F.A.Q.s.  We know sometimes parents just have a simple question and here at Bruin Nation we want to point you in the right direction.  We will continue to update this page as the year moves forward.  If you are new to the school community this will be extremely useful! We are always here to help!

Immunization Update:  Ms. Dillman, and the entire BMS staff would like to thank each and every parent of a BMS student for seeing that their student had the immunization as required.  BMS parents rocked it out.  Keep in mind that there will be a second shot for those who just got the first, so set those appointments now.  Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

SMART START MONDAY.  Students are encouraged to wear their favorite College or Career Shirt.  It could be a NCAA team or your favorite military branch (Go Navy). Students may want to wear a suit, or a tie because they may want to be a lawyer, doctor, a meteorologist, a news anchor etc... so we are calling Mondays- "Smart Start Mondays"  to encourage College and Career Readiness. Fridays will be our BMS Spirit Gear Day and wearing the right shirt or outfit on the right day will earn points for your House!

PTSA will be selling exciting new BMS shirts very soon. Keep an eye out for more information on that! Go Bruins!

Be Bold Cards:
One way we celebrate kids includes our Be Bold Cards, when students are caught going over and above teachers and staff can award them a Be Bold Card.  We teach students here to be respectful, be responsible, be safe, be here and be bold in kindness, courage and excellent work ethic.  Ask your student if they have received a Be Bold card throughout the year.  It is a small way to show our appreciation to students who go over and above. FIRST GIFT CARD OF THE YEAR TO BE GIVEN AWAY THIS WEEK TO ONE OF OUR CURRENT BE BOLD CARD recipients.

BMS Week of Aug 13-Aug 17

Dear BMS Community,

It has been an extraordinary start here at Bernheim Middle School, we couldn't ask for a smoother start! Students are excited and are already getting back into the swing of things.  Thank you for making sure your students were here and ready for a great year!  In each classroom students are getting acquainted with their teachers and the new content they will be learning.

LOCKERS & CHROMEBOOKS
Students will receive lockers next week after all their paperwork and fees are turned in to their homeroom teachers so please have students turn those in by Monday.

Students who did not pick up Chromebooks prior to the start of school will receive those this week, but they must have the blue T.R.U.E. form turned in with their Chromebook lease fee by Tuesday.  Please ask them about these forms they were sent home with them last week.  Lastly, we strongly suggest each parent/guardian purchase a hard protective shell for their student's chromebook, repairs are pricey.

Immunization Update:
One more update for the State immunization requirement.  There are still a few students who do not have those turned in, as much as it upsets us to even think it, legally we cannot allow them back to school without it.  Please make sure those are complete and turned in on the correct document.  If your student has received the first shot for the HEP A vaccine, please go ahead and make the second shot appointment PRIOR to the 6 month expiration date.  We will have to exclude those students if six months pass without the second shot requirement and we certainly don't want to do that at all.  Please know this is a Commonwealth of KY requirement not a BMS or BCPS requirement.  The BMS community has jumped in and for the most part taken care of this for their student.  Thank you very much for that! If you have questions or need to email your scanned document to the school please send it to stephanie.dillman@bullitt.kyschools.us ,  She can answer all questions regarding the immunization requirements.

Bruins in the HOUSE! Student Celebrations!
Students of the Week & Month:
We have many ways to celebrate students and we are working to celebrate even more success for students.  One way we celebrate students includes when teams select students as a student of the week or a student of the month.  We place those names on the BMS Highlights and here on News Bytes- as well as they scroll on the daily announcement slide and on social media.

School Wide Bruin Bash:
Another way we celebrate students is the school wide Bruin Bash. The Bruin Bash celebration are awarded to students who do not have any missing assignments, are passing all their classes, students who have no unexcused events, (including late check ins or early checkouts) and students who have avoided behavior events for the set period of time.  Students get to participate in fun activities and have the opportunity to purchase Kona Ice.

House Competitions:
We also have a House System here at BMS and each grade level is it's own house.  When a house wins the House competition they get their very own HOUSE Bash Celebration.  Things included in the competition are academics, behavior, attendance as well as spirit participation and keeping our House neat and orderly.  The 6th grade are our Cubs, 7th Grade are the Bears House and the 8th grade house is the Grizzlies, we wish all the houses a great year and hope for tight competition.  As a spirit day every Monday will be SMART START MONDAY.  Students are encouraged to wear their favorite College or Career Shirt.  It could be a NCAA team or your favorite military branch (Go Navy).  So pull those shirts out of the closet and wear them on Mondays!! Fridays will be our BMS Spirit Gear Day and wearing the right shirt on the right day will earn points for your House! Let the competition begin!

Be Bold Cards:
Yet another way we celebrate kids includes our Be Bold Cards, when students are caught going over and above teachers and staff can award them a Be Bold Card.  We teach students here to be respectful, be responsible, be safe, be here and be bold in kindness, courage and excellent work ethic.  Ask your student if they have received a Be Bold card throughout the year.  Their names also go into a drawing for a gift card every month.  It is a small way to show our appreciation to students who go over and above.

BMS Renaissance Rally:
Twice a year we will have our big celebrations celebrating students called the BMS Renaissance Rally. These days are spectacular for students who have been successful academically, behaviorally and for those who "show up" and have perfect attendance.  We have gold status winners who are all As, Silver Status winners who are As and B's, as well Bronze Status winners who have perfect attendance.  This is a huge celebration and happens twice a year! Look for more information as we get closer to these dates!

We want to celebrate students as often as we can because they are AMAZING.  Please encourage your student to keep their grades up, show up and always do the right thing.  There are so many opportunities to participate in great celebrations we don't want anyone to miss out. We are so thrilled to be able to partner with you as we grow together with BMS students.

Welcome Back 2018-2019 We are GAME ON!

Dear BMS Community,

We are so excited to see your students on Wednesday August 8, 2018~  Teachers and staff have prepared a wonderful learning environment for each of the students we have here at BMS.  They can't wait to begin this year's adventure with your child! We provide information in a multitude of ways so please visit and favorite the school website and BMS News Bytes. BMS News Bytes includes regular newsletters including "Whats Going On" and Student Celebrations.  Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and sign up for the Remind App to keep current with the latest BMS updates!

THE BRUIN WAY:
We believe it is imperative to teach students not only academic content but to encourage them to live in such a way that even as adults they can look back to the lessons taught here at BMS.  Every day we focus on living by the Bruin Way: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe, Be Here and Be Bold in Kindness, Courage and Excellent Work Ethic. It sounds simple, but these words encompass so much of what it takes to make the world a better place we believe it is important to teach these concepts directly.  So if you hear your student coming home talking about The Bruin Way or saying "Be Bold" you can engage them in conversations around the greater good.  We thank you for helping create an extraordinary environment in which your student can learn and grow.

WELCOME TO BRUIN NATION:
Mr. McCamish
Ms. Gray, Ms. Perdue

We have several new faces this year.  Ms. Angie Gray (6th Grade) ,Ms. Mackenzie Perdue (7th Grade) ,  Mr. Dominic McCamish (8th Grade) , Mr. Allan Leith ( 7th and 8th grades) and Ms. Katelyn Gullett (6th, 7th, 8th Instructional Tutor) and they are all thrilled to be a part of BRUIN NATION.  Each have been working to build an exceptional learning environment for your student and are ready to begin!  We are so pleased to have them on board!

CHROMEBOOK INFORMATION:
Thank you to all of those who came to Back To School Night and our first ever BMS Chromebook Rollout.  We will have a second Chromebook distribution after school begins, the district lease fee is $35 and the T.R.U.E. form must be signed by both parent and student.  Please look for additional details soon.

One-to-one technology is a real world, 21st Century tool for students to learn how to engage in the world around them.  Students are to make sure their Chromebook is charged nightly and make sure it is at school every day.  When they don't have their Chromebook it could impede their ability to participate fully in the instructional opportunities in class.

Please remind students that it is necessary to take care of these devices as it is expensive to repair and students end up missing out on some instructional opportunities while their Chromebook is in the 'Chromebook Shop' being repaired.  We strongly recommend purchasing a protective shell for the Chromebooks, much like a case for their cell phones it makes a big difference in the life-span of the device.

FIRST DAY FORMS AND PACKETS:
Students will receive a registration form as well as a folder with all of the Back To School forms, information, paperwork, and notice of school fees to be returned to school by Friday.  Teachers will distribute lockers when all items have been collected.  Please help them speed up this process by being quick to send back the required items.

WE ARE SO GRATEFUL FOR BMS PARENTS:

Thank YOU to to our PTSA and our PTSA President Ms. Angela Harper for making BMS a wonderful engaging place for families!  Ms. Harper has been an active member of the PTSA for over a year at BMS and this year became president.  She has already organized a great group of parents that have been highly engaged in helping BRUIN NATION be game on! BMS PTSA is always looking for enthusiastic parents to be part of the PTSA, if you are interested please contact Ms. Harper at  agharper502@gmail.com .

Thank you to Crystal Tomlinson, Nikki Cavote and Linda Hester for helping with our collection and distribution of Chromebooks. Also thank you to Angela Harper, Kathy Clark, Crystal Tomlinson, Nikki Cavote for serving as PTSA officers this school year.  We are excited and can't wait to see the great things they will do this year.

IMMUNIZATIONS:
Time is running out!!! Your Student MUST have the Hep A vaccine prior to the start of school. You can email or fax them into school tomorrow or you can send the immunization record with your student on the first day of school.  BMS still has 42 students without the proper immunization record.  Please get this taken care of immediately as it is a law in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  Please make sure your student has a great start to the year by taking care of this urgent matter.

We look forward to seeing everyone Wednesday!

Bruin Nation is Game On!
