Dear Parents,

As you have been made aware by BCPS officials, our school district will now be implementing Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) beginning March 16, 2020-March 27, 2020. This action is in response to the Governor’s mandate due to the COVID-19 virus.  The district has shared an informational document addressing several questions in how BCPS will work through this process. Below you will find more specific information for your student ar BMS. Our goal is to work with you and your student to ensure that high quality learning continues to occur during this time.  Remember school is not cancelled, these are school days.

What is a Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) School Plan?
This is a plan that provides detail on how ALL students will continue to receive instruction on a day when school is not open due to unpredictable circumstances. The plan provides teachers a time to provide learning activities and opportunities in a variety of ways (online and paper-based) that still allow students to learn and master grade-level standards along with individual support as necessary. This plan provides a unique and alternative use of instruction time while preparing students to learn new content when school is back in session.
How will instruction and content be delivered?
Instruction will be delivered through Google classroom as well as various other digital learning platforms. 97.4% of BMS students have internet access outside of school day.  For the other 2.6% of students teachers will create paper copies of instructional material and provide that material to students who have no access to the internet. We are creating a location outside of the building where parents can pick up and drop off hard copies for students. (This will be available 24/7).  Teachers will continue to utilize online resources that they have already used this year, including Google classroom, Khan Academy, IXL, Moby Max, Reading Plus, Common Lit, Newsela, Brain Pop, Edgenuity, etc.

When will instruction be delivered?
Instruction will be delivered daily from March 16th  to at least March 27th. During this time frame, teachers will be available for assistance and digital support from 8:15-11:15 AM and 12:15-3:15 PM. Students and parents will be able to communicate with their teacher or principal via email, phone, google classroom or the Remind App.

When will this be communicated?
Teachers will share lessons with students daily via Google classroom Teachers will check-in with students daily via Google Classroom and in some cases phone calls. School administrators and teachers will continue to share information with parents and students through News Bytes, Class Highlights, Remind, Facebook, newsletters, and Infinite Campus messenger. Staff will be available to assist students as much as we possibly can.

How will my child’s attendance and participation be accounted for?
Student participation and completion of online or paper-based assignments is connected to your child’s attendance on non-traditional instruction days. Students will be given a daily grade for their participation in classwork, whether their work is done digitally or on paper. Supports will be provided, on an individual basis, for any extenuating circumstances for work completion. Teachers will also be keeping a record of communication via Infinite Campus on non-traditional instruction days to help monitor student participation.
