10/31/22-11/4/22| BMS Newsbytes: Updates, Celebrations and News!

Dear Bernheim Community,

This week in Bruin Nation we had our first Minute to Win It house competition! The Cubs and the Bears took the lead in that! The Grizzlies are doing a wonderful job of “BE Here” in the Bruin Way.  8th grade Grizzly attendance has been very good! Mid to Upper 90’s most days! Keep it Up! We also had our first House Bash of the year that went to the Cubs House! They had a great time and have already grown up so much since the beginning of the school year, we are so proud of them.

Monday is Halloween and we are letting students dress up.  We have been very clear with the expectations that the costumes they choose to wear are HAPPY Halloween costumes: think Disney, Bob Ross, Happy costumes.  No masks, no blood or gore, and certainly no pretend weapons.  We want students to enjoy the day and also want to keep the space “Happy”.   This tradition is one students enjoy and we hope to be able to continue it.

Frequently parents ask about homework for their students.  Homework is being assigned every day to all students, however it is pretty simple.  Read for 20 minutes each evening AND practice their math facts every night for 10 minutes.  If students don’t get done with their classwork, it may turn into homework, but generally homework time is saved for practicing those two important skills, Reading and building Math Skills.  Please contact your student’s teacher if you have specific homework questions.

Please check out the Dates to Remember! We have a FRIENDSGIVING Dance coming up November 18th. The dance will cost $5 per student and is from 3:00-4:30pm.  Students must be passing all classes and free from Major Behavior Events to participate.  Pick up from the dance will be exactly like the afternoon car riders procedure.

DOES YOUR STUDENT NEED HELP?

BMS is offering ACADEMIC SUPPORT (after school ESS) this MONDAY.  We will have Academic Support regularly on Monday and Thursday from 3:00-4:30.  Amanda Korby is coordinating the program for us this year.  Please reach out to her at amanda.korby@bullitt.kyschools to request your student be signed up.  We are going to support students with general help  for all classes and will have a MATH Club after school as well.

COUNSELOR’S CORNER

As always please email amy.bush@bullitt.kyschools.us with any questions or counseling needs.

Student Portfolios are underway! Students began working on a Portfolio they will use to document their progress throughout this year. At the end of the year BMS will host a Student Showcase where students will share these with their parents.

BMS staffulty are committed to student growth.  We are going to continue to work to help students succeed in all areas at BMS.

HOMEWORK

The expectation of BMS is that each student has a book to read and has access to EPIC (books online). Every day each student needs to read for 20 minutes every evening.  The second part of their homework is to strengthen their simple math facts.  A very helpful tool is the website Math Flash Cards at math-drills.com.

Please help  manage their time to include reading time and math practice time. We are so proud of the BMS school community and we have the absolute best school community anywhere.

BMS ATHLETICS

This will be a busy week for the Bruin basketball teams.  The 8th grade girls will be playing for the county championship on Tuesday November 1st, here at BMS.  Come support the ladies on their quest to repeat as county champs. The boys’ basketball team will be starting their season this week with games against Eastside and Bullitt Lick.

Cheer: In other news, the BMS Cheerleaders brought home 2nd Place in the Small Junior High Division Saturday 10/22/22 at the BCHS Cheer Challenge. These ladies had zero deductions and gave an amazing performance for their first competition of the season. So proud of these spirit filled Bruins!

Which House is Winning This week? BMS  has a house system that is based on students' year of graduation.  Each house can earn points based on areas that are linked to the Bruin Way.  Points are earned by the percentage of the house on the honor roll, free from referrals, attendance, school spirit, showing responsibility for yourself and others,  participation in community service, random acts of kindness, and more!

Keep Being Amazing Bruin Nation!!!

We do our best to keep you informed! BMS News Bytes is our weekly newsletter, favorite this blog and the school website. BMS Class Highlights includes each teacher's snapshot about what's going on in class.  The school website has all forms, information, calendar updates and district information you might need. Individual teacher websites are extremely useful to both students and parents. It is important that you log into Parent Portal and choose the option to receive email and texts from the school.  Not only can you view your students grades, attendance and other information it is also a great communication tool to keep you connected.  Lastly, please follow us on social media including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.  We also have @hentryclaytime  on Instagram to keep up with the antics of our school therapy dog. As you can see we want to make every effort to stay connected with families.

Thank you again for providing us the opportunity to serve you and your students.
